I have friends and family abroad so the world clocks was vital in my life. I couldn't find a widget app because I wanted to create consistency and uniformity between my iPad and Mac and I liked to have some information constantly displayed. (And yes I tried plenty of freemiums before deciding to subscribe.) Just having a proper screenshot software such as Cleanshot would cost me almost as much. Regarding Setapp, for me it's really worth the subscription fee. The developer u/mrtnlxo is included in this discussion and is responsive for feedback, so this is another app I'll be watching and trying again later. For me, it was currently at bit too much. So, if someone is really interested in customizing not just the desktop but whole UI, this might be a good option. Superlayer is a recent release, and different from the previous options as it provides possibility to make actual floating layers and add triggers for actions. I think I'll be watching this app and maybe try it at some point when I have time and interest to tinker with fonts and colors. It made me wonder whether I'm in some trial period, or will the app apply subsription fees later to everything? Anyway, this app has big community here, lots of widgets with contemporary looks, and option to copy and tweak the widgets endlessly. It says the app includes in app purchases, but when I tried it, I could use all the options I tried. Anyway, the volume of widgets was confusing, some of them were obsolete, and they seemed to offer integrations to tools which I don't use. This was actually a nice experience: there's plenty of widgets which can be endlessly modified if you have VSCode and know even some preliminary HTML5. This is free and open source app with a community produced widgets. Anyway, the free version was too limited for me. weather, clock and battery widgets + ability to choose a few changing backgrounds, which was nice. Sure, the price would not have been too much, 2,99 dollars a month, but I'm a PhD student now and can't go subscribing everything I see on the net.īut, about the app itself: they offer some limited freemium stuff also, e.g. First thing I have to say is that I get annoyed every time when I come across an app, which does not tell the pricing straight, but boasts "Download free". The app is included in the Setapp subscription, which offers other solution for desktop calendar. The app is also being developed currently and the developers seem responsive for feedback, so I hope they add for example calendar widget. Anyhow, it offers almost all the basic widgets I need and looks quite nice as it is, so I decided to go with it. This app is maybe the most out-of-the-box option in this list, which means also that the customization options are currently quite limited. So, once I found the preferences, I could add widgets and set some global preferences. I sent a complaint to the developers who gave me a prompt response: the app can be launched from the Menu Bar. I had discarded WidgetWall initially, since I just did not find the apps preferences! Yes, my mistake, but I did not find documentation, and nothing happened when I clicked the app at the App folder. Please find below some thoughts on the options I tested. All had some cool features and also caveats from my perspective: I wanted a solution that works for me quite out-of-the-box, as I did not intend to spent too much time on this now.Īnd, as mentioned above, I settled to use WidgetWall. So, I spent one evening going through some of the options I had seen in recommendations here and there.
